So, something happened while I was studying on Saturday. I came upon a section that was quite about numbers in one of the subjects I’ll be examining in my next professional-level exam.
I am not a number person, but lately, for the sake of learning, I have tried to put in the effort. Talk about intentionality to understand numbers.
I understood one section after repeated looks, but the other I couldn't. I tried to go over the previous paragraphs. Nothing therein prepared me for the challenge. I was disappointed, not defeated. It was late at night, so I decided to close the material and let my tired mind rest, hopeful that a new day would bring clarity.
The morning came, but it was the same. I didn't get the reason for the “deviation” in the workings of the case study. Just allow me to borrow the term for lack of the right mathematical term. Almost 30 minutes on the same page. I decided to just move forward.
“I can revisit this problem,” I told myself.
I moved on to the next sub-section and page.
Walahi, the details I needed to understand what I struggled with earlier were there.
You can guess the thought I had: "This should have been stated before the case study. Why is this under a different sub-section that follows when it's part of what I need to understand the case study in the previous section?"
To answer my question, "Life is not linear."
Sometimes, as my numbers struggle, life throws confusing stuff at you. Don’t be quick to self-condemn. Rather, try and try and try. I could have said, “I’m so dull with mathematics. Let me not even waste my time on this section. And I’m sure, by doing so, I wouldn’t have realised the relevance of the paragraph to the math problem.”
Evaluate your self-perception. Don’t be enslaved by it
Like how I needed to move forward to understand the math problem, life doesn’t always go in a straight line. There will be confusing parts, and you don’t always arrive with all the answers, yet you have to keep going and stay curious. You might find the answers when you least expect them.
Also, when life gets tough and you don’t seem to understand the narrative, it’s okay to take a step back. Time can bring a fresh perspective. That’s on one hand.
On the other hand, it’s okay to move forward. Time can also provide you with new insights that provide you with the clarity you need to revisit what you previously had no answer for.
Such is life.
