Progress Is Give-And-Take
It's on one of my travels last month.
This driver lowered his hands, asking ours to let him overtake. We're on a better lane in the midst of traffic. Ours obliged.
A few moments later, our driver was making the same request to enter another lane. How fast the table turns. Right?
If you've ever been caught in traffic, you’ve probably observed the choreography of commercial bus drivers. They move to a lane that looks like it's moving. Even if it means jumping back to the one they just moved out of.
So, the one our driver obliged had moved ahead and jumped back to the lane he previously left.
Unfortunately, he didn't oblige our driver’s request to overtake.
“That's it o. I let you overtake me. It's your turn, but you hardened your heart.” Our driver was hurt.
“It's better to give than to receive.” He yelled back, with laughter.
“Foolish man!” One of the passengers burst out, laughing.
Two other passengers chimed, reminding us that there's always a quote nearby to make everyone feel right, even if it meant taking it out of context.
We're quick to want mercy, but slow to give it.
We crave understanding, but struggle to extend it.
Everyone loves to be let through, but few love to make room.
When life takes a turn, we suddenly have “reasons.”
How will you treat shift?
One moment you're the one asking for help, the next you're the one in a position to give it.
It's okay to be competitive. To want to move fast.
But remember this: life flows best when we take turns making room. For others. For things.
Progress also builds on give-and-take. If everyone insists on moving first, what happens?
Sometimes, you need to pause, let others through, to listen, to support, and to rest.
Who/what are you making room for this week?
Stay BAKE!
